An issue of calling for a petition for a referendum was presented to the Clark County's office yesterday noon just a minute before the deadline. The voters are likely to be asked if they want to allow riverboat gambling. The general election ballot will take place on November 7. The petition was presented yesterday by Tom Tomlin and Ida Callahan.
A total of 818 petitioners' signatures were submitted yesterday said Shirley Bell, the clerk's chief deputy. If the signatures are all validated, the proposed issue would be on the ballot for the first time since the county's voters rejected gambling in 1993 and 1995.
Included in yesterday's petition signatures were the names of many prominent Republicans like former New Albany Mayor Regina Overton, who now lives in Jeffersonville, Glenn Murphy Jr., chairman of the county's Republican Party; and Jeffersonville City Councilmen Ron Grooms and Ed Zastawny.
Grooms agreed that voters should decide the issue whether to allow the casino or not. Although he himself said that he would not support a casino in Clark County.
Rejection of casinos in Clark County in 1995 triggered a 10-year moratorium on additional votes on the issue. If the casino is defeated again this fall, another 10-year ban would be put in place.
